ISRO former scientist Nambi Narayanan has filed a defamation suit against Gujarat former DGP R B Sreekumar for what he termed were unjustified and scandalous remarks the latter made against him.
The petition was filed before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate here on Tuesday.
The basis for it was a report published in a leading Malayalam daily in which Sreekumar allegedly stated that Nambi Narayanan had a role in the corruption related to the ISRO spy scandal.
The former space scientist, who was an accused in the infamous case, has sought Sreekumar’s ‘’prosecution and conviction under Sections 499, 500 of the Indian Penal Code for wilfully, deliberately, intentionally and grossly defaming the complainant on wholly and completely false, unjustifiable and scandalous grounds thereby disparaging and harming goodwill, fame and reputation of the complainant in the society.’’
Sreekumar was deputy director, Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) at the time of the ISRO spy scandal. The CBI, which later investigated the case, concluded that it was fabricated.
According to Nambi Narayanan, the CBI also proposed stern departmental action against ‘’delinquent IB officials’’ including Sreekumar.
‘’The ISRO espionage case was pure imagination, wishful thinking and sensationalism,’’ Nambi Narayanan said in his petition.
He also pointed out that he was slowly regaining his reputation in the society and fighting before various forums against the officers who trapped him. The National Human Rights Commission had in 2001 awarded him an interim compensation of Rs 10 lakh, he said.
Sreekumar had made the statement ‘’with a sole motive to malign’’ his image in society, Nambi Narayanan alleged. He has also urged the Court to pass orders awarding him ‘’appropriate compensation’’ under section 357 of the CrPC.
The Court will record Nambi Narayanan’s statement on March 1, his lawyer C Unnikrishnan said.
