A first-time Reunion for 'Students' of Government Boys HSS, Karamana

Arjuna award winner Sam Christudas, as well as theoretical physicist Thanu Padmanabhan and FRRO Director K K Jayamohan will be honoured on the day

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Karamana was started in 1963. Despite the school’s evident history, it has never had a reunion. “The reunion on September 12, will be the school’s first ever get-together of former students. Arjuna award winner Sam Christudas, a former teacher at the school, as well as theoretical physicist Thanu Padmanabhan and FRRO Director K K Jayamohan, both of them former students, will be honored on the day,” said school Principal Sudarsanan P.

The school has supported many talented individuals, and not all of them were students. Some were teachers like Sam Christudas, the former captain of Kerala badminton team.

He was a Mathematics teacher during the day, and a badminton instructor by evening. “ After the last bell, we would have practice sessions on the school ground. I continued to do the same when I was transferred to Model school, and some of my badminton students are well known,” adds Sam Christudas.

The first school headmistress Nalini Srinivasan passed away this year. “ The school had its heydays when Nalini Srinivasan was at its helm. The students here would always get admission in the best medical schools,” remembers Sam Christudas. Her family is expected to attend the meeting.

The school is busy sending out invites and making arrangements for the grand day. According to school authorities, they have met and spoken to 92 of its retired teachers. More than 70 should be able to make it, according to the Principal.

Over 700 former students are expected to attend the function. Thanu Padmanabhan has informed the school that he won’t be able to make it, but will spend time at the school when he flies down to Thiruvananthapuram.

This year, the school authorities have plans to start interactive sessions with the school’s illustrious alumni. Apart from Thanu Padmanabhan, famous doctors, chartered accountants and renowned personalities who studied at the school will spend time at the school.

The alumni is gearing up for more initiatives, like introducing a smart classroom at the school. There is also a plan to start a vegetable garden and paddy farm.
