Foot over-bridge; more wardens at east fort planned

The decision was taken in the wake of reports that Illegal parking and  haphazard crossing of pedestrians from Chalai were causing accidents

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In the wake of increasing traffic accidents in East Fort, NATPAC has been entrusted with preparing a project report on setting up a foot over-bridge in the area More traffic wardens and police personnel will also be deployed in East Fort to ensure smooth traffic in one of the busiest stretches of the capital. This was stated by Minister A  K Balan on behalf of the Chief Minister to a submission by V S Sivakumar of the Congress.


The Minister said that a meeting chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) on July 19 had found that illegal parking and the haphazard crossing of pedestrians from Chalai were causing accidents in East Fort.
In order to ease congestion, buses from Beemapally to East Fort have been disallowed to take U-turn in the area. It was also decided that auto-rickshaws at the stand should be relocated and parked on a ramp near the Gandhi Park.


The Transport Commissioner had also convened a meeting on August 18 and decided that barricades and medians should be put up at East Fort to prevent haphazard crossing of pedestrians. The divider would be dismantled and destination boards and numbers would be put up.


The traffic flow will be regulated by setting up three traffic lights between Pazhavangadi and Attakulangara. The work on bus bays, walkways and pedestrian crossings would also be completed. The parking of KSRTC buses would also be relocated to KSRTC-owned land in the area.The government will also chalk out long term plans to ease the traffic woes in East Fort, the Minister added.
