Bin demo gets thumbs up

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Capital city corporation is showing the way ahead in waste disposal. At a time when waste management has been creating a major headache for civic bodies across the state, the Thiruvananthapuram corporation has been taking the lead in campaigning for decentralised waste disposal.

The live demonstration of kitchen bin at Palayam, launched by the corporation with an aim to dispel doubts about its effectiveness, has been getting good responses from various corners. The 15-day long live demo campaign started last week, as there were doubts about the system. At a time when waste collection and removal from households has not been effective, kitchen bins are the only way out, feels the corporation officials.

When centralised waste treatment plants may not be always practical such methods of decentralised waste disposal becomes the only way out, pointed out Thiruvananthapuram Mayor V K Prasanth. He further pointed out that kitchen bins are the most environmental friendly method of garbage disposal. The live demonstration of kitchen bin at Palayam has invited good response from various corners. About 200 people have already recorded their opinion at the live demo.   “The corporation is of the view that  citizens should go forward with the concept ‘waste from my household- my responsibility’.  Some people are of the view that waste from one’s hosuehold is to be handled by some one else,” he said in an apparent reference to former health minister V S Sivakumar who had complained about the effectiveness of the kitchen bins.

In fact, it was a tussle between the Former Minister and Finance Minister Thomas Isaac, a staunch advocate of decentralised waste management through kitchen bins, that led to the live demo. “The three kitchen bins will be open for the public to see. There will be waste put in the bins everyday. Let them come and check whether there’s any smell or insects,” said Isaac’s Facebook post referring to his challenge to V S Sivakumar.

On Friday, Thomas Isaac inaugurated the demonstration of kitchen bin at Palayam market. Inaugurating the expo, Isaac pointed out that decentralised waste disposal is the best method in the country and the demonstration will help to remove misunderstandings if any.

As prt of the demonstration which will be on till November 4, a website -  www.corporation.ofabee.com - has been launched for live streaming. Along the demonstration discussions related to waste management are also being held on a daily basis.
