Confusion persists over ‘real’ National Highway passing through Kerala capital city

The confusion over which is the real National Highway (NH) in Thiruvananthapuram does not seem to end.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The confusion over which is the real National Highway (NH) in Thiruvananthapuram does not seem to end.

A few days ago, several beer and wine parlours inside the city had won a favourable interim order from the High Court on the grounds that the old NH, passing through Kazhakootam and MG Road in the city had ceased to be part of the NH 66 with the opening of the NH bypass passing through via Chakkai to Kovalam.

Five beer and wine parlours had opened on the strength of this order. However, the Public Works Department (PWD) is understood to have advised the Excise Department that the old NH is still the official national highway as the NH bypass is still incomplete. The PWD is also planning to seek a clarification from the Union Ministry of Surface Transport regarding the NHs in Thiruvananthapuram.
