THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by the Sree Chitra Thirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) and the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) to set up a Medical Devices Park at the Life Science Park premises that was developed by KSIDC in Thiruvananthapuram.

SCTIMST director Asha Kishore and KSIDC managing director K M Beena signed the MoU in the presence of SCTIMST president K M Chandrasekhar.

The Medical Devices Park, which is estimated to cost around Rs 180 crore, will be set up with financial support from both the state and Central governments.

The main aim of the Medical Devices Park is to create an enabling support system for the development and research of medical devices.

Other processes such as testing and evaluation of medical devices and biomaterials can also be done here.
It also aims to provide manufacturing support, technology innovation and knowledge dissemination for the medical devices industry.

When completed, the Medical Devices Park proposes to have a medical device training centre, a centre to facilitate research and development in medical devices - whose services could be shared by entities within the park -  a centralised knowledge centre for upgrading skills and facilities to conduct training and provide support on regulatory issues as well as clinical trials.

A technology business incubation centre for the promotion of start-ups and early stage companies and  modular manufacturing units for lease by industries are also likely to be part of the Medical Devices Park.
