Warning issued against outbreak of epidemic

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Health Department has issued a warning on the possibility of an epidemic of mosquito-borne communicable diseases. The warning comes in wake of the intermittent rain which has been lashing the district. In a circular, the department said the public should not allow rainwater to collect.

The population of aedes species of mosquitoes, primarily responsible for transmitting dengue, has been rising in the district in the past decade.  As soon as the monsoon arrives a surge in dengue cases is seen.
Open coconut shells, plastic waste like broken buckets, mugs, bags, unused tyres and the latex collecting shells in rubber plantations are some of the major breeding grounds for mosquitoes. To keep prevent the spread of water-borne diseases like typhoid, jaundice, cholera and diarrhoea, it is important to drink boiled water.

The boats anchored in the coastal areas should be kept closed since there is a possibility of water collecting in them. Water on the terrace and sun shades should be drained regularly. If tarpaulin is used, make sure water doesn’t collect in it. Even water used for cleaning utensils should be chlorinated properly before use. Stale food should never be mixed with fresh food and it should always be kept covered.

Personal hygiene is most important in keeping away water-borne diseases. The wells should be closed using net, vent pipes of the closets should be closed using nets and close the openings of drains. The District Medical Officer advises people to not take over the counter medicines for fever. Proper clinical diagnosis is important before taking medicines.
