Beyond the cuppa

Kerala’s first bubble tea brand opens in Kochi serving healthy bobas and tasty treats.
Beyond the cuppa

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Over 1,00,000 combinations of teas are available at Teamo Club! This 24-cover, premium tea-based cafe at Manorama Junction can churn out so many beverage variants as they have a highly customisable permutation of base drinks, flavours, pops/jellies and toppings.

While I nibble on their nachos dipped in   salsa, owner  Abhil Sebastian hands me an elaborate beverage menu shaped like an old-school 12-inch vinyl record.

“We are Kerala’s first bubble tea or boba cafe (first Teamo Club outlet opened at Thrissur in 2014). While waiting to find the perfect location in Kochi, I tweaked this Taiwanese drink’s recipe to suit the Indian palate,” claims the 26-year-old entrepreneur. Abhil explains that, bobas are basically sweet milk beverages combined with tea and bubble-like tapioca pearls.

Slurp it up
First, I pair a refreshing green tea-infused strawberry slushy and mango jellies—coconut cream-based chewy pulps—with a plate of housemade hot chocolate momos. While there are only three wheat-based
momos on the platter, biting into one feels like eating a whole Bounty chocolate bar.

Though their chicken chipotle wrap is insipid, I cannot get enough of Teamo’s signature taro powder-based, black tea boba with chewy tapioca pearls in homogenised full cream milk (available from next month).

Since all their drinks are served in leak-proof takeaway glasses with large straws—which enables easy passage of the jellies, pops and pearls—I opt to takeaway a thick, appetising strawberry ice-cream shake with butterscotch crunchies back to the office.  Meal for two: Rs 400 onwards.
