THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The first artistic medical exhibition - Medex 2017 -which highlights various facets of modern medicine opened at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College on Tuesday.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched the expo at the Medical college. Considered not just an exhibition, Medex 2017 gives an endless possibility for a real experience of travelling through various facets of modern medicine.
Health Minister K K Shylaja, who was present at the launch, said that it was not just an exhibition but a scientific expo that looked into the advances in medical science. As superstition is prevalent in many spheres, she hoped such expos would help people see the reality. “The expo would help people see what human beings are,” she said.
Stating that the government was for bringing in changes in the health care system in the state, she said there could be some protest when such changes are brought in. All the differences could be sorted out through discussions. There is a need to revise the staff pattern in hospitals. The government is taking all steps to appoint adequate number of staff in hospitals, including doctors and paramedics, she added.
The government wanted to convert Thiruvananthapuram Medical college as a centre of excellence and to bring the college within the top ten ranking in the world. Good planning is needed to make it a success, she added.
Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran, KUHS PVC Dr A Nalinakshan, Medical College principal Dr Thomas Mathew and others were present at the inauguration.
Claimed to be one of the biggest healthcare carnivals, the exhibition is arranged on two lakh square feet area on the campus. The exhibition is jointly organised by the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) and the Students Union of KUHS and Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The exhibition will also be part of the 65th anniversary celebrations of the host Government Medical College.
Elaborating on the practise and science behind modern day health care, the exhibition showcases more than 1,000 exhibits depicting normal to pathological varients, original specimens of diseases, animation and videos, medical illustrations and posters, virtual and augmented reality shows, mega walk-ins and interactive learning devices.
The specimens will reveal the original human body and its internal organs, disease patterns, sonological and microscopic views and artefacts used in forensic sciences. Walk-ins include human organ systems, replicas of operation theatres, intensive care units, transplantation units and forensic scenes. Molecular world of cells and genetics will also be presented through quality 3D Animations. There would also be a series of talk shows that will witness prominent medical practitioners.
