THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After being shut down for over a year due to maintenance work, the Tourism Department’s Yatri Nivas near Child Welfare Council, Thycaud, has begun functioning.

Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran inaugurated the renovated Yatri Nivas at 10:30 am on Wednesday. Thiruvananthapuram MLA V S Sivakumar, Tourism Joint Director Anitha Kumari and Yatri Nivas manager Rajiv were present on the occasion.

Yatri Nivas provides cheap and good quality accommodation for ordinary tourists and visitors to the capital. In the wake of complaints that there was no eatery at Yatri Nivas, the Tourism Minister directed the department officials to set up a hotel in the premises.

Since there are only nine staff members at the Yatri Nivas, the government will post more staff from the Hospitality Institute and Food Craft Institute.

At present, the Tourism Department runs two Yatri Nivas in the state and bookings are done through the Department. To make the booking process easy and transparent, an online reservation facility would also be set up, the Tourism Minister said.
