Drainage leak: Residents move rights panel

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: THE residents of Plamoodu-Thekkinmoodu in the city have approached the State Human Rights Commission requesting urgent solution to a problem which they say has been plaguing them since 2013.

A drainage line in their neighbourhood had sprung a leak in 2013, and although funds were sanctioned for laying a new line, no work has been undertaken so far, the Plamoodu-Thekkinmoodu Residents’ Association said in its complaint to the commission. The residents also allege that the sewage discharge from a nearby hostel is let out into the drainage, causing a major health hazard in the locality.
In 2013, the government had responded to a plea by the association saying the drainage issue would be solved soon and the pipelines would be replaced, association president M Sasidharan Nair and secretary Edwin Benjamin said in a statement.
In 2016, the government had also sanctioned `3.98 lakh for the work, but the project is still on paper, the association officebearers said.
