121 cases settled by women’s commission

The two-day adalat held by the State Women’s Commission which concluded here on Thursday managed to settle 121 out of the total 273 cases registered.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The two-day adalat held by the State Women’s Commission which concluded here on Thursday managed to settle 121 out of the total 273 cases registered. While 52 cases were resolved  on the inaugural day, a settlement was reached in 69 cases on the second and final day.
Besides, 134 cases were posted for hearing at the next adalat as additional details were needed and four cases were referred for counselling, while 14 have been forwarded to various departments for their report.  
In one of the cases, an elderly woman refused to live with her children though they were ready to accept her.

Against the woman’s demand she be paid `4,000 as monthly maintenance,the children agreed to pay her `5,000.  On a complaint by a woman who accused a neighbour of preventing her from drawing water from the public tap nearby the panel directed the panchayat to intervene in the matter. Similarly, the commission came to the rescue of a young wife barred by her husband from keeping contacts with her kin.

Another elderly woman from Neyyattinkara complained about the people in her locality. She said her life was made miserable by her neighbours. But the commission found the woman, who lived alone, had 15 dogs. Her property did not have a retaining wall and the neighbours had complained about the nuisance created by the dogs. The commission directed the panchayat to intervene in the matter.
According to Women’s Commission member,Lissy Jose, majority of the cases heard on Wednesday was civil in nature including marital discord, and domestic violence.
