14.5 kg of gold ornaments worth Rs 4.8 crore seized

A team of officers from the state GST Department detained three Rajasthan natives at Amaravila check post and seized 14.5 kg of gold ornaments, worth `4.80 crore from them on Monday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A team of officers from the state GST Department detained three Rajasthan natives at Amaravila check post and seized 14.5 kg of gold ornaments, worth `4.80 crore from them on Monday.

The trio - Mahendra Singh, Karsan Kumar Dewasi and Suraj Pansingh - was caught during a vehicle check near Amaravila check-post by three squads led by State GST officers C.S. Anil, Gopakumar and Suresh Kumar.

According to Anil, the three were on their way to deliver the ornaments with weight tags to jewellery outlets in the district. During inspection, the officers found the ornaments concealed in the arm rest of the car’s back seat. The jewellery was brought from Tamil Nadu. A few days ago, the officials had confiscated around 1 kg of gold ornaments while being transported from Thrissur for Neyyattinkara. There has been a sharp increase in the seizure of unaccounted gold in recent times.
