THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  Abunch of school students of Dr G R Public School, Neyyattinkara, recently turned police officers for a day. The Student Police Cadets of the School were those who received the rare opportunity as part of the Children’s Day celebrations on November 14.Suresh Babu, Community Police Officer of the SPC wing at the school, felt that the initiative served its purpose to bring children to the forefront. “Though November 14 is known as Children’s Day as well, most people find it an occasion to celebrate our first Prime Minister’s birthday. It was an initiative to give the students an awareness on the activities within a police station,” he said.

Ninteen girls and 22 boys took charge of the activities at the Neyyatinkara Police Station till noon. A variety of programmes were conducted for students with the assistance of the station head officer S Bijoy. After initial familiarisation with the police staff, the cadets were given instructions by SI James, Aiyyappan Nair and WPC Asha. In fact, besides being a project by the SPC, the activity was held as part of the Janamaithri Suraksha project of the police. “We felt the Student Police Cadets need to be familiarised with the activities within the station.

From the reception to the activities of SI, they had to understand all the activities.”  According to the station head officer Bijoy, the students grasped everything quickly and put forth a good performance. He states, “They were given tasks, from sentry duty where they had to get details from whoever visits the station and find out the reason for their visit.

They also had to deal with small complaints and petitions. The students also had to attend phone calls and entrust whoever were available with the task of going to the spot and enquire the details.” Speaking about the response from the students as well as the feedback from the police personnel, Suresh says, “Since it is an important office, which also includes a traffic station, the performance of the students could be watched and assessed. The feedback was positive. The students also found it was a unique and refreshing experience.”

Along with Suresh Babu, the event was also coordinated by the school SPC’s ACPO Lidya Varghese.
The school’s SPC wing conducted a traffic awareness campaign near its campus premises the other day.
