42 Jail inmates to take equivalency exam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: From the darkness and isolation of their cells, it’s time to embrace the light of knowledge for 42 inmates of various jails in the state.

The jail inmates will appear for the Class IV equivalency examination of the State Literacy Mission on Sunday. The highest number of candidates - 23 - are from Central Prison, Poojappura. While 12 inmates will appear for the examination from Kannur Central Prison, five inmates of Kozhikode Sub Jail and two from Cheemeni Open jail will attempt the equivalency examination.   

Poojappura Central Prison Superintendent S Santhosh Kumar will inaugurate the equivalency examination by distributing the question paper at 10 am on Sunday.

Written examination will be held for subjects such as Malayalam, Around Us and Mathematics. The English exam will be conducted orally. The inmates became eligible for the examination after successfully completing various courses conducted by the Literacy Mission.   

As many as 7,500 prisoners are lodged in 56 jails across the state. Out of the 1,338 inmates in Poojappura Central Prison, 209 are illiterates.
