THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Poovachal, has added yet another feather to its cap as the Education Department has adjudged its Parent Teacher Association (PTA) as the best in the high school category in the district.

The award consists of a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and a scroll of honour. The school PTA was selected for its exemplary initiatives both in the academic realm and also in the social sphere.

The PTA of Poovachal GVHSS had been at the forefront of activities such a raising money for providing assistance to the needy, setting up an organic farm and reclaiming encroached land that belonged to the school. The assistance provided by the PTA in the activities of the National Service Scheme, Scouts and Guides and Junior Red Cross had earned widespread appreciation.  

The award also took into account the contribution of the school PTA towards selecting the school, located in Aruvikkara constituency, as a  center of excellence of international standards. The initiatives carried out by the PTA in connection with the golden jubilee celebration of the school was also considered as an important criterion for the award.

The school PTA was also adjudged the best in Neyyatinakara sub-district. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 20,000 and a scroll of honour. The school has received as many as 12 awards under different categories for its various activities this year, Sammer Siddiqui, faculty member and NSS coordinator of the school said.  

The PTA, which comprises of Poovachal Sudheer (president), headmistress Jayanthi Devi, Higher Secondary Principal R Bindu and VHSE Principal Seema Xavier, said they were elated at the honour for the school. They said the award would provide further encouragement to pursue more innovative initiatives.
