THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Maranalloor police have arrested a member of the gang that assaulted Sajikumar, a local Congress leader at his residence at Ooruttambalam near Neyyattinkara. The arrested is Sreenath, a neighbour of Sajikumar. On Thursday night, a six-member team reportedly barged into Sajikumar’s residence after turning off the power supply and assaulted him.

They broke the legs and arms of Sajikumar using an iron rod. He also suffered injuries to his genitals.  The assailants fled from the spot after leaving their vehicles behind. It helped the investigators to trace the assaulters. Sajikumar’s father and mother were present at the residence at the time of the incident. The local residents arrived at the spot after Sajikumar’s parents raised an alarm.

The police said Sreenath and the other members of the gang had enmity with Sajikumar. However, they did not reveal the exact reason behind the attack. The police have started collecting the details of a ‘parallel’ college run by Sajikumar in the past. The police once again recorded the statement of Sajikumar, who is under treatment at the Medical College Hospital.  Meanwhile, the accused attempted suicide at the Maranalloor police station by cutting his veins. However, he was rescued by the police personnel and was taken to a nearby hospital.
