THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet on Tuesday issued its in-principle clearance to the report by Justice K K Dineshan Commission entrusted to look into the issues in the functioning of self-financing educational institutions in the state.

The Commission was appointed as a prelude to bringing in a legislation to ensure government control over self-financing institutions. Justice Dineshan Commission had submitted its recommendations before the state government in 2017. While the managements welcomed some recommendations, some other proposals did not go down well with the managements.

The Commission had reportedly recommended to facilitate the education of financially backward students at self-financing colleges. Also, there were recommendations that students should be allowed to form college unions.

In its report, the Commission is learnt to have recommended that self-financing colleges should be treated on par with aided colleges. Therefore, special concessions currently given to aided colleges should be extended to self-financing institutions also.

Apart from proposals regarding the fee structure of self-financing colleges, there were also suggestions regarding a mechanism to address issues between students and managements.
