THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Poised for a quantum leap in organic framing, Kattakada Assembly Constituency has launched ‘Jaivasamrudhi’. A joint initiative of Land Use Board, Haritha Keralam Mission and Agriculture Department, this novel project aims to make the six grama panchayats of the constituency self-reliant in vegetable production. It is learnt that the ‘Jaivasamrudhi’ comes close on the heels of ‘Jalasamrudhi’ project envisioned by IB Satheesh MLA to replenish the water table of the constituency.

“This is a three-phase project. In the initiative, we aim to select one ward from each grama panchayats and make them a model ward in organic farming,” said A Nizamudeen, commissioner, Land Use Board.
It is said that the model-ward concept will first be implemented on a pilot basis at Plavoor ward of Kattakada Panchayat, Vellayilkadavu ward of Vilappil panchayath, Venkoor ward of Vilavoorkal grama panchayat, Manjadi ward of Malayinkeezhu panchayat, Karingal ward of Maranalloor panchayat and Kannancode ward of Pallichal panchayat.

According to the Commissioner, in the first phase, the barren lands in the constituency will be identified and will be converted into cultivable ones. In the second phase, government institutions and schools will be asked to set up organic vegetable farms and medicinal farms on their premises. Whereas in the third phase, kitchen gardening and rooftop farming will be propagated covering all houses.

“Once barren lands will be turned to cultivable ones, we will take up paddy cultivation, vegetable, plantain and tapioca cultivation there. For this, we will ensure the wholehearted support of farmers’ co-operatives, residents associations, youth and political organizations,” adds Nizamudeen.

He added that for the implementation of the project, the support of National Cadet Corps, Student Police Cadets, National Cadet Corps, Parent-Teacher Associations, teaching staffs, students, residents’ associations, Ayalkootams, Kudumbasree and others will be sought.
