The ‘Dakshin Prahar’, the annual exercise conducted by the Southern Air Command of the Indian Air Force (IAF), will come to a close on Wednesday.

This year’s exercise - which, for the first time featured the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft, had begun on Sunday was being conducted from Thiruvananthapuram and the air fields at Thanjavur and Sulur in Tamil Nadu.

Dakshin Prahar is conducted to test the ability of the IAF to protect the Southern Peninsular region of the country as well as the island territories. The aircraft which participated in this year’s exercise included Sukhoi-30, Jaguar, IL-78 flight refueller aircraft, C-130 J aircraft for special operations, AN-32 transport aircraft and ALH helicopters.

‘’Dakshin Prahar aims to hone the skills of IAF aircrew, maintenance and administrative personnel and radar operators.

It also validates the operational concepts of SAC and the procedures between the IAF and Airport Authority of India for flexible use of airspace over the Southern peninsula,’’ a defence spokesperson said. ‘’The exercise enhances the civil-military cooperation and ensures that air space management is streamlined,’’ the spokesperson said.
