Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA) members on Thursday staged a protest in front of the Directorate of Health Services, demanding the government to reduce the duty hours of doctors. About 300 doctors participated in the protest.

Inaugurating the agitation, KGMOA state president Syam Sunder said that they would intensify the agitation if the government did not heed to their demands. He said that the government was compelling the doctors to do extra hours of duty instead of filling up the vacancies in the hospitals.

Syam Sunder claimed that Wednesday’s protest did not affect the functioning of government hospitals. OP and IP facilities functioned normally. Emergency services were not affected and casualty also functioned, he claimed.

In a recent order, it was stipulated that the doctors doing night shifts should take up the day shift too depending on decisions taken by the medical officers and hospital superintendents. Earlier, the doctors were given day off after the night duty.  The KGMOA staged the protest in front of the DHS after a token strike last month in this regard.
