LDF leaders protesting against Chief Minister Oommen Chandy at Devaswom Board Junction near the Cliff House had embarrassing moments on Thursday morning when a local woman vented her ire on them for the “undemocratic protest” blocking even pedestrian movement.

The police had erected barricades at the junction, where the road leading to the Cliff House and another leading to the Nanthancode- Kuravankonam road start. Sandhya was prevented from travelling to her residence on the second stretch barely 250 m away from the barricades.

The hapless woman vent her anger on the leaders present, including CPM district secretary Kadakampalli Surendran and V Surendran Pillai. The leaders’ explanation that the protest was for the public failed to pacify the woman, who scolded them for “denying freedom of movement to the public”.

The leaders later demanded that the police should remove the barricades to save them from public wrath. However, the police didn’t heed to the demand citing security reasons.  Earlier, the CPM leaders had alleged that the blocking point was “purposefully chosen” to make them sweat under the scorching sun.

Meanwhile, the local residents’ associations have taken up the issue and asked the CPM and police to allow vehicular movement along the stretch. They are now travelling an additional two km to reach the Devaswom Board Junction via Nanthancode during the protest held in the mornings.  The 140-day protest of the LDF demanding a judicial probe into the solar panel scam had started on Tuesday.

“We had allowed scooters on the first day but stopped after party workers sneaked through the space,” said a police official. “A decision to allow vehicle movement should be taken by higher officials,” he added.
