Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma, the new head of Travancore royal family, was anointed the custodian of Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple on Friday morning.

The rituals began with ‘thirumudikalasam’ at the Kuthiramalika Palace complex where temple thantri Tharananalloor Parameswaran Namboodiripad poured holy water over the new head.

The holy water brought in a golden pot from the temple was poured on Moolam Thirunal who sat on the floor with the holy sword on his lap.

The sword was submitted by King Marthanda Varma in the temple during ‘thripadidanam’, the ritual in which he dedicated the kingdom to Lord Sree Padmanabha.

The next ritual, ‘padiyum padiyettavum,’ held at the Kulasekharamandapam in the temple witnessed the traditional declaration of appointment. Later, in a ritual held at the ‘ottakalmandapam’ of the temple, periya nambi (the chief priest) officially handed over the holy sword to the new head.
