Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday emphasised the need for developing the coastal regions. Chandy was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Cooperative Engineering College at Muttathara near here.

The engineering college is being established under the aegis of the Co-operative Academy for Professional Education (CAPE). He also called for a joint effort by all sections of the society for the development of the state.

In Phase I, mechanical engineering, electronics and communication, civil engineering, avionics and electronics and instrumentation courses will be started at the college, Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb said.

Finance Minister K M Mani laid the foundation stone for the academic block of the college. The government is moving ahead with plans to start classes at the college in the next academic year, the minister said. Once the Vizhinjam international seaport materialises, Muttathara will develop into a major township. The amount required for the college will be sanctioned in the next annual budget, Mani said.

Health Minister V S Sivakumar said that houses will be built for the inhabitants of the colony for the disabled at Muttathara under the Rajiv Gandhi Awas Yojana scheme. The regional centre of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will become a reality soon in the district, he said.

Cooperation Minister C N Balakrishnan presided over the function.

Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA) chairman P K Venugopal, CAPE director Dr S Raveendran and District Collector K N Satheesh were also present.
