Two-year jail for taking Rs 1000 bribe

VIJAYAWADA: Sounds harsh, but corruption attracts harsh punishment. Justice Vengaiah of the ACB Court here on Wednesday convicted Kada Venkata Ramanamurthy, a former forest section officer, under CrPC Section 248 (2) and sentenced him to two years in jail for taking a bribe of Rs 1,000. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1000 for the offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

If the convict fails to pay up, he will have to spend three more months in jail. Complainant Venkateshwarlu, a contract employee approached ACB sleuths when Ramanamurthy demanded a bribe to clear his salary payment. Following the complaint, ACB sleuths caught him red handed while accepting a bribe on May 26, 2005.
