Helmets, seat belts mandatory from Sept 1

Officials to take action against govt employees for not wearing helmets

VIJAYAWADA:  In a bid to bring down road accident fatalities in the district, Krishna District Collector B Lakshmikantham said that it is mandatory for all the two-wheeler riders to wear helmets and four-wheelers to wear seat belts from September 1.Addressing the district road safety committee held at his camp office here on Saturday, Lakshmikantham said that major road accidents in the district are reported because people don’t wear helmets. The committee has also decided to impose hefty fines against the violators. “The government employees should particularly be more cautious and wear helmets. Officials have been directed to initiate departmental action against those found not wearing helmets for their two-wheelers,” said Lakshmikantham.

The Collector also directed district transport commissioner E Meera Prasad to organise awareness programmes on road safety to sensitise the public on traffic rules and regulations. Observing that there is a delay in execution of works taken up by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), he said that irregular parking of vehicles on the roads is also causing accidents. DCP Gajarao Bhupal sought the officials of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation to inform the police in advance about road digging for laying of drinking water pipelines so that they can take alternate routes to avoid traffic snarls at major junctions of the city.
