Dowry demand prompts 28-yr-old to attempt suicide

A married woman reportedly attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills after her husband allegedly harassed her for additional dowry on Saturday.

VIJAYAWADA: A married woman reportedly attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills after her husband allegedly harassed her for additional dowry on Saturday. The incident was reported in L N Puram village of Nandivada town in Krishna district. According to Patamata police officials, the victim Pavani Naganjali (28) married Gopal Krishna, a resident of Nandivada town, in 2014. Two years post marriage, Krishna started harassing her for additional dowry. 

Vexed with his behaviour, she consumed a bottle of sleeping pills around 11 am. On learning, family members rushed her to a private hospital in Vijayawada. Doctors claim that she is out of danger.  

Later, Pavani’s  family lodged a complaint against Krishna at Patamata police station where they claimed that they already gave `2 lakh cash and 85 cents of agricultural land at the time of the marriage. In the complaint, parents further alleged that Krishna must have forced Pavani to consume the pills. A case has been registered under section 498A of IPC (dowry harassment). The investigation is still on. Cops further said that they are investigating both the claims.
