Vijaywada: Coaching centres cash in on GST, fleece students

Qualified Chartered Accountants and Commerce graduates are queuing up for a GST course for which institutes are charging somewhere around Rs 15,000 to  Rs 20,000 for a duration of 10-15 days.

VIJAYAWADA: Qualified Chartered Accountants (CA) and Commerce graduates in the city are queuing up for a course in GST for which institutes are charging somewhere around Rs 15,000 to  Rs 20,000 for a duration of 10-15 days. Commerce students who have completed their B.com/M.com or are pursuing their final year searching institutes to learn about GST.

Institutes are being flooded with students and CA professionals keen to learn GST. The institutes are coming up with modules ranging from online method to crash course and certificate courses.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) Vijayawada is offering a 10 day course on GST for qualified CA professionals. The main objective of the course is to make the Chartered Accountants updated with the new taxation policy. The course costs Rs 18,000 in Tier 2 cities like Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam etc. The same course is being charged at Rs 20,000 in Metro cities.

Chitta Amar Sudheer, Member of ICAI Vijayawada said, “Learning GST is always recommended for professionals to avoid interruptions in their work environment. To cope up with the ongoing changes and bring greater awareness about the new tax policy, the Indirect Taxes Committee of the ICAI has decided to introduce the certificate course on GST. The objective of this course is to enhance knowledge as well as to provide benefit to the members in the global service market.”

Private institutes in the city are charging Rs 3,000 for a course duration of 12 hours (2 days) and Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 for a certificate course of 15 days. Soft copy of study material and study manual of 700-1000 pages are also being provided. Large number of commerce students are lining up before institutes and learn about the new taxation policy. With the sudden increase in demand, the institutes are increasing their faculty strength.

“After the implementation of GST, most of the students are keen to know more about GST. For that we are conducting interactive sessions with the most experienced faculty to help students grasp the subject with ease. We are providing video lectures and skype classes along with online learning facilities for students who cannot turn up physically for the classes,” said V Padmaja, Incharge of Tax skills institute in Vijayawada city. B Anirudh, studying final year B com said, “Learning GST may not be mandatory at the moment but in coming days it might be. I decided to learn it to gain better job opportunities.”
