VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada is all set to celebrate third International Yoga Day today. All government offices, schools and colleges would be organising an event.
Though the State government had earlier promised to implement yoga sessions in all government schools of the State, it is still a dream. In fact, many individuals in the city have been showing an interest in yoga, considering its multiple benefits. This has led to many yoga teaching centres cropping up in the city.
Soon after the completion of Yoga day, everything would be forgotten. This is what happened in government schools in the year 2016.

A senior official from school education department said that the government is working towards its implementation from this academic year. As a pilot project, yoga classes would soon be implemented in municipal and model schools.
Apart from the government, citizens of Vijayawada are showing a keen interest in yoga. A good number of yoga and nature cure centres have been mushrooming in the city. Of late, yoga is not just being practised by those who have been advised by doctors but, also by others as they are considering it as an alternative to aerobics and exercising in the gym.

“Majority of the people prefer yoga over gym, aerobics and other fitness workouts. But, yoga is not just confined to fitness or healing illnesses, it is much more eternal. yoga intensifies the human soul, by bringing upon a sense of calm and peace. Slowly, people are changing their mindset and practising yoga,” said J Srinivasa Chakravarthy, yoga guru.
While gyms in the city are charging anywhere between Rs 1000 to 1500 per month, yoga centres are charging Rs 300-1000 per month. Apart from traditional yoga, power yoga, which is a general term to describe vigorous fitness based asanas, is also being taught at yoga centres. It is mostly preferred by young people to relax and decrease their stress levels.

“Earlier I used go to the gym but I didn’t like it. My friends suggested I join yoga classes. It has had a great impact on me. Apart from fitness, it has made me strong inside. For seven years I have been into yoga and I feel connected to this,” said V Saraswati, house wife.
