VMC all set to launch waste management plan on world environment day

VIJAYAWADA: On the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) will implement a new solid waste management plan by segregating dry and wet waste generated at the households.

Part of the Ministry of Urban Development’s  initiative to manage waste in all cities across the country, the VMC officials chalked out a plan to create additional infrastructure to strengthen the city’s solid waste management.

On Thursday, Municipal Commissioner J Nivas inspected the division No 54 and directed the sanitation officials to prepare an action plan to implement the move. “Each sanitary inspector was asked to give the list of facilities needed, placing garbage bins inside streets and providing push carts to sanitary workers to collect the segregated waste from residents,” said Nivas.

The Municipal Commissioner also informed that VMC will distribute two different colour bins to separate the dry and wet waste generated from the households.Initially, awareness campaigns will be conducted educating people about the project and the method. Later, the civic body may collect fines, if people failed to segregate waste at source.

“We will start a campaign for source segregation similar to the one carried out for Open Defecation Free (ODF) across the city. Banners will be placed in major junctions across the city and pamphlets will be distributed to residents asking them to adopt source segregation of waste,” he added.

Later, Nivas inspected the vermi compost plant under Ajitsingh Nagar flyover and directed the officials to identify and repair the defunct vermi compost plants across the city.

The civic chief also instructed the officials to take up the repair works at LBS stadium and provide basic infrastructure for the convenience of sportspersons and morning joggers.
Corporator Karimunnisa, VMC executive engineer J Srinivas and other officials accompanied the municipal commissioner during his visit.
