VIJAYAWADA: Water levels at Srisailam Project are swelling up with copious inflows from Jurala Multipurpose Project in Telangana. At 8 p.m. on Saturday, the water levels at Srisailam project stood at 865.4 feet (volume at 123.92 TMC). The inflows were recorded at the discharge rate of 1,64,068 cusecs while the outflows stood at the discharge rate of  86,565 cusecs.Following heavy rains in Mahabaleswara region of Maharashtra, the inflows into Almatti, Narayanpur and Jurala projects upstream of Srisailam have increased. As those projects are brimming to the capacity, the water being received in those projects is being released downstream without any delay.

Irrigation department officials say that they are expecting that the inflows will continue for another 10 days. “If the the present levels of inflows continue for another fortnight, then achieving Full Reservoir Level that is 885 feet (215 TMC) is very much possible,” said a higher official of the department. The copious inflows into Srisailam are bringing cheers on the faces of people in both Rayalaseema region as well as parts of Guntur and Prakasam district.

For several weeks, people, including farmers of those regions, were worried as to whether they would face a drinking water crisis as the expected rains did not come.  In a matter of just 10 days, the entire situation has changed, thanks to heavy rains upstream of Jurala. As per the directions of KRMB, water is being released to Nagarjuna Sagar and Rayalaseema through Pothireddypadu head regulator.
