Racketeers pose as couples to run flesh trade in Vijayawada

VIJAYAWADA: Despite continuous police vigil and Commissioner’s Task Force (CTF) sleuths conducting regular raids, prostitution in Vijayawada goes unabated in posh and residential colonies.In some of the recent cases, it was found the racketeers often posed as married couples and convinced the house owners to let them rent their property, which was used for flesh trade.  

One such case was reported on March 2 in Ajit Singh Nagar. A city-based businessman, A Sankara Rao, gave his flat at Ajit Singh Nagar to a woman who claimed to be a government employee. She said her husband was employed as a marketing manager with a pharmaceutical company.To his dismay, he found out a month later that police had raided his flat and busted a prostitution racket.Six women and 13 men were held in the raid, a police official said.

Four prostitution rackets were reported since January and raids at three of the cases were done at rented properties.The criminals’ modus operandi is to fake as married couples before property-owners and neighbours and run their business in disguise at residential posh areas in the city and its outskirts.
“We have asked all house owners to verify the details of tenants before giving their property on rent. Such incidents will create unnecessary trouble for property-owners too,” Kanthi Rana Tata, joint city police commissioner, said.

In yet another incident, a city professor was arrested on prostitution charges in Machavaram a couple of weeks ago.The police said a woman was also arrested along with the professor and the two claimed to be lovers. The woman was a repeat-offender, who was arrested on previous occasions.A similar case was reported a year ago where a woman was caught red-handed for organising a prostitution racket at a rented place.
