Youth succumbs during treatment, family alleges negligence

VIJAYAWADA: The family of a man who was undergoing treatment after suffering from severe head injuries due to a road accident staged a protest on Sunday in front of Andhra Hospitals, Suryaraopet after the patient was pronounced dead. They alleged doctors’ negligence in treating him. Later, they lodged a complaint against the hospital and its staff.

Rajanna Manikanta, 23, met with an accident on December 2 near Kothapet while travelling in an autorickshaw and suffered severe head injuries. On being taken to a local doctor, he was referred to Andhra Hospitals, where he was admitted on the same day. The doctors conducted some tests.
Two days later, on December 4, the doctors said that they had observed blood clots in his brain vessel and he needed to undergo surgery without any delay.

According to Two-Town police officials, the deceased lived with his parents in a rented house near Pipula Road, under Nunna police station limits. He had completed his Intermediate in 2012 and was working as a part-time electrician. Recently, he had also applied for the post of police constable.

According to the doctors, Manikanta was suffering from high fever and Tuberculosis, and was thus shifted to the ICU. He was kept there for three days and on Sunday morning, he was declared dead, the police said.

“When we inquired about his health a day before they pronounced him dead, the doctors treating him assured us that there was no reason to worry. But on Sunday, they told us that he was dead, and did not even allow us to see his body,” Manikanta’s father, R Appa Rao, said.“He was preparing for the competitive exam to be held next month for the post of police constable. We had even arranged his marriage with our niece next month. His death has shattered all our dreams,” Appa Rao added, breaking into tears over his loss.

Following a complaint lodged by the Manikanta’s father, a case was registered against the hospital and the staff who treated him.“We will interrogate the doctors and investigate into the case. Necessary action will be taken if any negligence on the part of the doctors is found,” said the Two-town Circle Inspector K Murali Krishna.
