VIJAYAWADA:  District Chemists’ and Druggists’ Association condemned the reports published in vernacular media over the sale of expired drugs to people and the series of raids conducted by vigilance officials on medical shops, and said that Drug and Cosmetics Rule was being adhered to by all shops in the district and city limits.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, association general secretary PS Patnaik said that the number of people visiting retail and wholesale medical shops in city has reduced over the years because most doctors prefer prescribing only those medicines that are available at their respective clinics. Only 30 per cent people purchase medicines from retail shops because they are unable to afford going to corporate hospitals, he said.

He also denied the allegations over sale of expired drugs saying that those drugs were stored in separate boxes, as per the rule. He commented on the three medical shops functioning without a valid licence and said all shops should renew their licenses within six months of expiry, otherwise action against them will be taken. The association would have no objection then.

Patnaik then ruled out speculations of retail medical shop traders selling milk powders and nutrition powders for pregnant women without licence and said a majority of them had valid licenses. He also said the association was spreading awareness about not purchasing medicines online, as there was nobody to hold accountable for in case the drugs are unfit for consumption.
