VIJAYAWADA: Taxpayers Association (TPA) general secretary MV Anjaneyulu demanded that the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials withdraw the increased water and drainage charges.
Addressing a press meet here on Thursday, Anjaneyulu alleged that the ruling TDP council had increased water and drainage charges by 40 per cent in the city. TDP protested against the water and drainage charges being raised during the Special Officers rule in the city and assured the people that they would withdraw additional charges if they were brought to power, he said.

He also said the State government recently issued GO number 159, which was aimed at increasing water tax as per the recently issued policy on fixation of user charges for water supply in urban local bodies by the Municipal Administration.

As per the GO, the water charges for individual houses paying tax below `250/ month have to pay 50 per cent extra, and for the houses paying above `250, the hike would be 100 per cent. For apartments and industries water charges would be hiked by 150 per cent and for commercial establishments, the hike would be 200 per cent, he added.
