Soon, RFID tags for dumper bins to ensure effective garbage clearance

VIJAYAWADA:  The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is leaving no stone unturned to retain its Swachh Ranking. In this regard, the civic body has been contemplating to introduce Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags for improving door-to-door garbage segregation. According to the officials, the civic body generates 550 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSD) per day from 59 divisions of the city. Despite several measures are being initiated by the corporation to transform the city into ‘Swachh Vijayawada’, the garbage menace continues to haunt the city.

To overcome this, the civic body has proposed to install RFID tags for dumper and compact bins to alert the collection squads and vehicles and inform them about the bins which are uncleared. At present, the civic body has been shifting the garbage through 12 compact bin vehicles and 35 garbage shifting vehicles in three shifts to Pathapadu area and Nunna in the city suburb limits. With the new initiative, vehicle tracking management system will also be implemented for real-time monitoring of the city’s garbage vehicles from the point of collection till dumping yard and help civic body fix lapses on time.

Speaking to Express, VMC chief medical and health officer K Arjuna Rao said that following the directions issued by the State government under G.O. No. 279, the civic body has decided to adopt changes in the garbage collection and significance of real-time monitoring system. After installing the RFID tags to the bins, officials will thoroughly monitor the live visuals of dumper bins through real-time governance from a command control centre set up at VMC office.

The staff concerned will be alerted immediately and the piled up garbage will be shifted to the dumping yard through the compact vehicles. Municipal Commissioner J Nivas instructed the engineering department officials to conduct a ground level survey in the city and install the RFID tags to all the 660 dumper bins across the city at the earliest to address the garbage menace, he said.
