Five held in cordon and search operation in Vijayawada

Nineteen vehicles were also confiscated for not having proper documents.

VIJAYAWADA: With the prostitution racket organised in residential areas of Vijayawada coming into light following a complaint filed a few days ago, the city police conducted a cordon and search operation at Jakkampudi YSR Colony and took two old offenders, accused in gutka cases, and three suspects into custody.

Nineteen vehicles were also confiscated for not having proper documents. After busting the prostitution racket, police said they were focussing on activities of the public at colonies in city outskirts and verifying details of residents.

Kanthi Rana Tata, the joint police commissioner, Shaik Nawaj Jaan, in-charge deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Shreen Begum, Crime DCP, Murali Krishna, Two-Town Circle Inspector, participated in the cordon and search operation and conducted a door-to-door inspection.

During the inspection, police verified details of 65 persons. Two of them were accused in gutka cases and three were suspects in other cases.

They also took public’s feedback on movements of the old offenders and rowdy-sheeters in the colony. “With an objective to identify old criminals and maintaining law and order, we have carried out the search operation. We also took complaints from the locals,” said Kanthi Rana Tata.

He further said police had initially mapped the locality and blocked all entry and exit points at the colony.
He said most of the offenders and suspects chose city outskirts to hide presuming that there would be no police surveillance in those colonies.

He instructed individuals and shopkeepers to install CCTV cameras on their premises that would help in solving burglary cases at the earliest. He requested civilians to inform the police about suspicious movements of strangers in their localities.
