NTRUHS wants students fined for opting out after securing private college seat

In 2017, even after the last round of counselling was wrapped up, over 100 seats were vacant in B and C Categories.

VIJAYAWADA:  Dr NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) has proposed that students who withdraw admissions after securing seats at private medical colleges be fined 10 per cent of the total fee or an amount as fixed by the university.

In 2017, even after the last round of counselling was wrapped up, over 100 seats were vacant in B and C Categories because several students moved to other colleges, as a result of which another counselling session had to be called. Following requests from private colleges that strict rules be put in place to prevent the menace, university officials are mulling norms along the lines of those followed for PG admissions, requiring candidates to pay a certain amount to the university or college from which they are opting out.

As of now, NTRUHS is planning to impose a fine of 10 per cent on candidates who fail to turn up after the first round of counselling. If not, the varsity has proposed that students be fined Rs 50,000 for BDS seats, `1 lakh for MBBS B Category seats and Rs 2 lakh for MBBS C Category.“We are planning to impose fines from this year onwards as a large number of candidates who secure seats take off citing various reasons. Hopefully, this will no longer be the case,” NTRUHS Registrar Dr S Appala Naidu told TNIE.

Meanwhile, MBBS aspirants TNIE spoke to opposed the proposal, asking how officials could punish them for choosing better colleges. “In the first phase of counselling, I may get into an average college. It’s natural for students to want to try their luck in the second stage. Who knows? We may make it to a far better college, perhaps even get through the national quota. Fining us for this is ridiculous,” K Manaswini said.
