VIJAYAWADA: Sudden showers on Friday gave temporary relief to the citizens of Vijayawada. Waterlogging was seen at low-lying areas as 2-3 cm rainfall was recorded in the city. Weathermen said the drastic change in weather was an impact of Cyclone Gaja, which made landfall in Tamil Nadu on Friday.

With low-lying areas inundated, overflowing drain water and garbage resulted in foul smell emanating in various places.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), thunderstorm accompanied by gusty winds and more rain are expected at Vijayawada and other isolated places of the district in the next 24-48 hours.

Speaking about the change in weather trends, K Nagaratna, head of weather forecasting at the IMD, Hyderabad, said, “Due to the impact of Gaja (which has turned into a deep depression), light to moderate rains will take place in the coastal and Rayalaseema districts. In the coastal region, lightning strikes are likely to occur in the next 24-48 hours.”
