AP Pollution Control Board to issue guidelines for supply of plastic waste to cement firms

According to APPCB officials, Vijayawada generates around 550 metric tonnes of solid waste per day, of which 7 to 8 per cent is plastic waste.

VIJAYAWADA: To enforce strict implementation of ban on plastic waste in Vijayawada, the officials of AP Pollution Control Board (APPCB) are planning to issue guidelines to civic officials to handover plastic waste to cement manufacturers for revenue generation.

According to APPCB officials, Vijayawada generates around 550 metric tonnes of solid waste per day, of which 7 to 8 per cent is plastic waste. Despite, the civic officials imposing a ban on plastic bags (below 50 microns), they couldn’t achieve desired results. With this, several water bodies in the city are choked with tonnes of plastic waste and have become breeding ground for mosquitoes.

“To put an end to plastic menace the APPCB officials approached the VMC and explained about use of plastic waste in cement processing,’’ said APPCB director BSS Prasad.Speaking to TNIE, VMC chief medical officer K Arjuna Rao said that so far, the civic body didn’t receive any guidelines from the APPCB regarding handing over of plastic waste to cement manufacturers. “The civic body has a proposal to manufacture bricks out of plastic waste based on the method followed by Indore Municipal Corporation,” he said, adding that civic chief J Nivas has directed engineering officials to prepare designs for establishing a plant at AS Nagar.
