PNBS, railway station witness huge passenger rush; heavy traffic on highways

VIJAYAWADA: Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) and Vijayawada railway station witnessed heavy rush on Sunday as people who had been to their native place for Dasara festival, started travelling back to their respective destinations.

The APSRTC ran over 1,200 special buses to several places on Sunday alone to meet the passenger rush. Of the total, 263 special buses were plied to Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam and all of them were full. Though the rush at the bus station and railway station started on Saturday, it peaked on Sunday. Special kiosks and information centres were set up at the bus station to provide information to passengers about special services.

The number of special buses run on Hyderabad - Vijayawada, Vijayawada - Visakhapatnam, Bangalore - Vijayawada and Vijayawada - Chennai routes was quite high.

Meanwhile, private travels are also making a huge money by running extra bus services and also hiking the ticket price to cash in on the rush. While the APSRTC is charging 1.5 per cent extra fare in special buses, private travels are charging double the fare.

K Deepthi who is going to Bangalore, says, “The private travels are charging an exorbitant fare which is almost double the normal ticket price. Though the RTC is running special bus services, all the tickets are sold out. Hence, we are left with no option except depending on private travels to reach our destination in time.”

Similarly, the railway station also witnessed an unprecedented rush of  passengers. All the platforms of the railway station were jam packed with passengers. The SCR is running special trains to clear the festival rush.

The vehicular traffic on highways increased manifold due to plying of special bus services. At Kanchikacherla toll gate, a massive traffic jam was witnessed as vehicles stopped up to 3 km to pass through it.
