Dinesh Karthik made his ODI debut in 2004 against England at Lord’s, much before Mahendra Singh Dhoni, but has played only 67 matches since. With the wicketkeeper’s job going to the captain, the Tamil Nadu player has been in the team often as a batsman or whenever Dhoni got injured.

Having played his last match in August 2013, when Dhoni was rested, Karthik will be the main wicketkeeper in the Asia Cup. This is yet another opportunity for the 28-year-old, who made news earlier this month when Delhi Daredevils bought him for `12.5 crore in the IPL auctions, making him the second costliest player after Yuvraj Singh.

“I’m used to being called to the side so many times. It doesn’t play too much on my mind,” he said ahead of India’s opening match against Bangladesh. “I got to know about this three four days before selection. For me, it’s about coming out here. It’s important to get into the zone just before the game. I’m very excited to be part of this team. It’s one of the best teams. It’s an honour to represent India.”

Karthik came up with a vague reply when asked about India’s recent losses. “You should have asked this to somebody who was part of the eight ODIs. From an outsider’s point of view, I’m just coming into this team. As an individual, I can say, for me it’s going to be exciting. I’m sure it’s the same for all the players. But somebody who has played the eight games will answer this question better,” Kathik said.

Karthik knows the importance of the tournament as well his place in the team. “It’s a big tournament for all of us. It’s going to be exciting for all the young players, so we all are looking forward to it,” he said.

On his position in batting, Karthik said he has not spent much thought about it. “I don’t know when I will be required. I’m sure we will have a few discussions going into the game. I will try and use whatever little experience I have and bat to the best of my ability. There are a few guys who have played 100 games which is a lot of experience. They have been playing now for a year or two. They have been given a good run. We all have to go there and give it our best.”
