With Krishnamachari Srikkanth around, the atmosphere in the Sunrisers Hyderabad dressing room brims with joviality. And when the Aussie coach Tom Moody and former elegant batsman VVS Laxman join the ‘party’, the ambience gets even more livelier. The IPL-7 is around the corner but neither tension nor nervousness is evident anywhere. Instead there is camaraderie and bonhomie among the players.

‘President’ Srikkanth, in fact, stepped into the role of a journalist and started asking his players questions at the press conference of the Sunrisers team here on Friday, which also had ‘Prime minister’ Moody and ‘Dy Prime Minister’ Laxman  present.

The former national selector’s first question veered towards fast bowler Ishant Sharma.

“You are a prime bowler who has been winning us many matches last year. How do you feel this year?” asked Srikkanth. Ishant’s prompt and typical reply was, “Thank you for asking the question. I will try my level best to do well, what I did last time.”

The former cricketer, who was at his lively best, asked about the the musketeers of the team -- leg spinner Amit Mishra, West Indies skipper Darren Sammy and fast bowler Ishant Sharma.

“How do you like that,” he prompted, to which Ishant said the combination of three musketeers was different. “One is black (laughs), one is short and the other is tall. We enjoy each other’s company and make sure that we have a lot of fun.”

The mentor then turned his attention to all-rounder Karn Sharma, whom he was referred as the ‘magic leg spinner’. “Karnbhai, hindi mein baat karange ya English (we can speak in Hindi or English). I think you came into the lime light for brilliant performances. How confident are you?”

Just as confident as last year, responded the sportsman. Sharma was one of the top gainers with `3.5 crore and was retained for his solid performances from last year.

This year sees the entry of Irfan Pathan’s into the team, a fact that was warmly welcomed by Srikkanth. On asking him about his experience of working with Moody and the new team, Pathan assured that that the ball was still swinging. “The first two days have been wonderful which I can see as the team atmosphere is very good. As you can see, there is a lot of laughter and quite a relaxed one and the team is very focused. It is good to be part of such a team this season.”

Shifting focus briefly, Srikkanth drew attention to Andhra cricketer Y Venugopala Rao who was also present, calling him an old warhorse and a good batsman, before concluding with wicketkeeper Naman Ojha, whom he referred to as a clean striker of the ball.
