Allrounder Rory Kleinveldt was selected instead of left-arm seamer Lonwabo Tsotsobe for South Africa's three-test tour of Australia next month.
Kleinveldt, who is uncapped in tests, was included in a 15-man group on Wednesday.
Thami Tsolekile was selected as backup wicketkeeper for AB de Villiers, who will continue as 'keeper after Mark Boucher's international career-ending eye injury on the successful tour of England.
Fast bowler Marchant de Lange was not considered because of injury, while batsman Faf du Plessis was picked after joining the squad during the England series.
South Africa was still likely to keep the same starting team that took the top test ranking from England in August with a 2-0 series win. Graeme Smith's team plays third-ranked Australia in tests in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
Proteas squad: Graeme Smith (Cape Cobras, captain), Hashim Amla (Dolphins), AB de Villiers (Titans), JP Duminy (Cape Cobras), Faf du Plessis (Titans), Imran Tahir (Highveld Lions), Jacques Kallis (Cape Cobras), Rory Kleinveldt (Cape Cobras), Morne Morkel (Titans), Alviro Petersen (Highveld Lions), Robbie Peterson (Cape Cobras), Vernon Philander (Cape Cobras), Jacques Rudolph (Titans), Dale Steyn (Cape Cobras), Thami Tsolekile (Highveld Lions).
