MGR Medical Univ told to revaluate PG exam papers
The Madras High Court has directed TN Dr MGR Medical University to conduct second or third valuations, as the case may be, and send all answer scripts of a batch of petitioners in PG medical course irrespective of whether they have failed to secure the minimum pass mark in one paper or to secure minimum marks in the aggregate. This relief can very well be extended by the university to candidates who have not approached this court, as it appears that there are only a few candidates who have been declared failed, a single judge has said. The judge was partly allowing a batch of about 50 writ petitions from Ivan A Jones and others, who have joined the Post Graduate Medical Course in the MGR Medical University during 2013-14 academic year.

AICTE told to close down 16 fake ITIs
AICTE has been told by the Madhya Pradesh government to shut down 16 ITIs in the state as they were found to be fake after investigations. Minister of state for school education Deepak Joshi said 350 ITIs in the state were found to be bogus, out of the in the state. He added that the state had also asked the AICTE to take strict action against the 16 ITIs which are to be closed down immediately and the fate of the remaining 334 institutions, many of which might be fake, would be determined after the completion of the final report.

Dictionary to showcase Telugu culture
POTTI Sreeramulu Telugu University (PSTU) has decided to come out with a Telangana dictionary and encyclopedia to make neglected Telangana language and culture popular again. A Telangana dictionary is being prepared to provide information on various words used by the people of Telangana while the encyclopedia is aimed at preparing a comprehensive source of knowledge about Telangana culture, history and lifestyle.

Cultural fest at DG Vaishnav College

The PG and Research Department, Department of Biochemistry, DG Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam, hosted an inter-college cultural event, Cellutions at the college campus. Addressing the students at the inauguration, Chief guest Dr P Samudram enlightened the students on the applications of the subject in various fields. Samudram elaborated on a few choice applications, including how biochemistry was useful in drug testing. Celebrities RJ Shyam and RJ Syed of Fever FM 91.9 were present as judges for certain events.

Casteism in varsities breaking Dalit hearts

Caste discrimination in universities will give rise to even bigger social movements across the country, said Umar Khalid, one of the founders of Bhagat Singh Ambedkar Student Organisation (BASA), at JNU, Delhi. “University of Hyderabad scholar Rohith Vemula was a victim of caste discrimination in universities. But suppressive forces should know that Rohith’s death has only given birth to a mass movement,” said Khalid.

Poor quality of education in government universities is making the students prefer private institutions in the state, observed P Vijay Prakash, vice-chairman of Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education. “I have been to universities like Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar and a few others where I observed that there were about 6,000 students from AP pursuing their education. The students say that lack of quality education in Andhra Pradesh is making them move to private universities,” he said.

IIT, NIT students to take part at HRD’s Hackathon
In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Union HRD ministry will conduct a Smart India Hackathon 2017 in January-February 2017. A total of 30 lakh students from all technology institutes in the country will take part. “It would be the world’s largest event,” official sources said.
