A quiz team from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), won the grand finale of the Sweden-India Nobel Memorial Quiz 2016 at Indraprastha College for Women, New Delhi on October 7. They warded off stiff competition from 11 other teams in the final round and beat quizzers from other cities to become title holders and claim the big prize — a week-long trip to Sweden.

The team, comprising of students Ambuj Singh Gaharwal, Sunny Aryan and Kisalay, will visit the headquarters of global Swedish companies, Swedish universities and the Nobel Museum among other things. “We are extremely excited to have won the grand finale. We have received immense support from our college to reach this position. Sweden-India Nobel Memorial Quiz has given us this opportunity to prove our intellectual skills. The prize will also give us an opportunity to visit Sweden and renowned Swedish companies,” said Ambuj. The three boys are doing their post graduation in Culture and Folklore Studies at IGNOU.
Speaking about the kind of questions asked, Ambuj said, “There were questions related to various Nobel citations. Every prize winner has a citation, which we needed to know. The year in which a particular prize was awarded was also asked. There were various combinations. The quiz wasn’t just about the Nobel, it was about Sweden as well.”
Ambuj adds that the team prepared for 2 to 3 hours every day for about a month for the quiz and the preparations also involved memorising some Wikipedia pages. The college library came in handy for them to prepare.
