Need some career advice? Ask Mani

I just finished my 7th semester exam in BTech. I want to prepare for Civil Services Examination but I don’t want to drop a year for UPSC preparation. I don’t have a job at the moment though I will be writing GATE-17, hoping to get a job and I haven’t started my preparations yet. I need a job as a backup, considering the difficulty level of UPSC Exams. What should I do?

You need to take one step at a time towards consolidation and immediately take some action. First, prepare for GATE 2017 and get a job for yourself in any university system. This will give you the time to prepare for your UPSC prelims. It would be useful to join a coaching class for UPSC preparations.

My son, who is in class XII wants to be an automobile engineer. Should he take mechanical for graduation and then do his Post Graduation in Automobile Engineering?
Yes, your suggestion is practical and pragmatic; pursuing mechanical for graduation and then post graduation in automobile engineering would make his base stronger. Further, he can keep all his options open till he completes his engineering. It may be good to visit a career counsellor and do an aptitude test to clarify his aptitude and interests.
