NALGONDA: District Collector and Election Officer Dr. Gaurav Uppal named a visually impaired person as a district poll icon, who will be entrusted with the task of creating awareness about the elections and the voting process.

And the person chosen for that task is Ponugoti Chokka Rao, who has been running a school for the blind with the help of donors for the last 20 years.

Chokka Rao, who won several awards for his social service from both the Central and State governments, speaking to Express said: “I would like to thank the Election Commission and District Collector Dr. Gaurav Uppal for this opportunity.”

Terming the Braille script currently being used in the voting process as an old system, he urged the Election Commission to introduce EVMs equipped with audio system and earphones.
