SIDDIPET: Telangana Rashtra Samithi chief K Chandrasekhar Rao who is seeking the people’s mandate for a second term as Chief Minister filed his nomination papers from Gajwel constituency, even as his nephew, party leader and minister in the previous Cabinet T Harish Rao followed suit in Siddipet Wednesday afternoon.

The caretaker chief minister offered prayers at Koinapally temple and placed his nomination papers at the feet of Lord Venkateswara Swamy, a tradition he has been following since 1985 when he first contested elections.

The deeply religious leader who takes astrology seriously submitted two sets of nomination papers to returning officer Vijayender Reddy in Gajwel between 2.21 pm and 2.55 pm — one proposed by former ZP chairman Laxmi Kantha Rao at 2.33 pm and another by Nacharam temple chairman K Yadagiri at 2.35 pm — in the presence of election agent and childhood friend Jahangir.  At 2.39 pm, He took an oath in God’s name to do his best for the State.

The pink party supremo addressed the people of Konaipally and urged them to vote the TRS to power. Rao promised upon Lord Venkateswara that he would make the farmers of Telangana the wealthiest in the country and exuded confidence in the party’s chances of winning 100 seats in the forthcoming polls. He also showered praise on Harish Rao for doing a commendable job in the constituency. “Make sure he wins with a thumping majority of over one lakh votes,” he told the cheering crowd.

After filing his nomination papers, Harish Rao, the caretaker irrigation minister who will be contesting from Siddipet for the sixth time, told mediapersons he had the blessings of the TRS chief.  He likened the people of the constituency to his family while promising them water from Kaleshwaram if given the mandate.

He added that if the government announced an award for development Siddipet would be honoured duly, thanks to the all-round progress it had made under the watch of his party. It may be recalled that Harish Rao had entered the political arena in 2004, when he took his uncle KCR’s place. KCR had been elected as a Member of Parliament, and as part of his alliance with Congress at the State and Centre, he was given the Union labour portfolio.
