Nicolas Ghesquiere new creative director of Louis Vuitton

French fashion house Louis Vuitton has announced fashion designer Nicolas Ghesquiere as its new creative director. He has replaced Marc Jacobs in the role.

Ghesquiere, formerly the creative director of fashion house Balenciaga, is excited about his new appointment, reports vogue.co.uk.

"Louis Vuitton has always incarnated for me the symbol of ultimate luxury, innovation and exploration. I am very honoured of the mission that I am entrusted with and proud to join the history of this great maison. We share common values and a vision," he said.

Vuitton said Ghesquiere would bring "a modern creative vision to the house's women's collections, building on the values of refinement, savoir faire and extreme quality".

Jacobs held the creative director's post in Louis Vuitton for 16 years and was responsible for turning the brand from a luggage and accessories emporium into one of the bestselling luxury labels in the world.

Jacobs stepped down from the role in October to focus on his eponymous line.
